Podcast 206 : Dynamic Range

Prefer to listen? There’s an audio player at the bottom of the post.

Today we’re going to talk about Dynamic Range. Dynamic Range is one of those words that crops up a lot, but is sometimes not fully understood. Indeed, I don’t profess to fully understand all the fine details, but I know enough about Dynamic Range to be useful to me when making my own images, so I figured I’d share this today, along with some information from a couple of great online resources and some general observations.

What is Dynamic Range?
In simple terms, Dynamic Range is the difference between the darkest thing and the lightest thing that your camera can capture and still retain detail in these areas of the subject. I guess would could think of it as pure black and pure white, because that’s what will happen as you hit the boundaries, and that may often [...]

Podcast #65 : Understanding Hyperfocal Distance

Here’s the transcript from Podcast number 65, originally released on Dec 2, 2006. If you’d prefer to listen, there’s an audio player at the bottom of this post.

Hyper-focal Distance

The hyper-focal distance is the distance at which a particular focal length and aperture combination can be focused at, to render everything from half of that distance to infinity in focus. This is especially useful to know about when we’re shooting landscapes for example, when we want sharp focus throughout the image, from the nearest to the further object. Here’s a couple of quick example of a focal length and aperture combinations and the resulting hyper-focal distance, before we get into the details. First, if we shoot with a 50mm lens at F16 aperture, the hyper-focal distance is 4.74m or 15.54 feet. That means if we focus on a point 15 and a half feet from our camera, everything from [...]

Podcast 205 : July '09 Assignment - Backlit - Results

"Gecko on leaf" by qmcgrath

So, the images that we’ll look at today as usual will be included in the enhanced podcast, so you’ll see them in iTunes or on your iPod etc. Of course here on the blog they are posted below.

Let’s first go through the top three winners of the July Assignment that was on the theme of Backlit.

In third place was the totally amazing image, Gecko on leaf by Quintin McGrath. This is really just such an awesome photograph. I totally love it. Quintin has basically caught a Gecko, as the title implies, sitting on a leaf, and shot it through the leaf, using, yes, you guessed it, backlight. This is has so much depth, as we see the shadow of the gecko become more blurred as up the legs and torso, then on to [...]

OPG Review: Delkin Express Card 34 Compact Flash Adapter

Delkin Express Card 34 Compact Flash Adapter

I recently gave the Delkin Express Card 34 Compact Flash Adapter a try for Outdoor Photo Gear, as a proud member of their Gear Advisory Board. Here are my findings.

I chose to try this Compact Flash Adapter from Delkin because I like the idea of having a slimline adapter that I can throw into my laptop PC bag and forget about, rather than the slightly larger multi-card adapter that I have now. The versatility of the multi-card adapter is nice, but the only memory cards I use other than Compact Flash are SDHC cards, and I already have a slot for SDHC cards built into my laptop. I also having an adapter for Compact Flash with no cables helps me to reduce the number of cables I carry, as my multi-card adapter requires a separate cable.

On opening the box, the [...]

Podcast 204: Q&A #11 – Signing Images and Fine Art Prints

Prefer to listen? There’s an audio player at the bottom of the post.

Last week I did my first Q&A podcast for a year, and actually had started out planning to answer questions from two listeners, but spent so much time answering the first question, I postponed today’s answer by a week. It’s great to get into these listener’s questions though, so again, if you have any questions, drop me a line via the Contact form. You can also drop me a line on Twitter, Flickr or Facebook etc. Links to all of these sites are on the left.

This week’s questions are from Russell Haddock from Fort Worth, Texas. Thanks very much for your questions Russell. Russell has two questions regarding the signing of photographs.

1. How do you create your signature that shows with all your online photos – is that just a Photoshop action you have developed – [...]
