The file that iTunes or other RSS feeds reads to see if there are new podcasts out got a little bit bloated with all the information for the 200 episode archive. Because of this, I decided to put it on a diet, and made a few major changes. This is to enable us to keep the entire archive in iTunes for a little while longer, and also to make it easier for me to integrate with other feed syndication services. That’s the next step but for now, you’ll notice the following two changes.
No More Streaming from Podcasts Page
I have removed the Stream Podcast button from the Podcasts page. If you used to use this streaming button, I’m sorry, but it’s gone. It not only took a fair amount of extra effort to input chapter timing information each week, I never heard of anyone actually using it, so it is no more. I may well be integrating a similar feature into this blog soon, so stay tuned for that.
No More Image numbers or Additional Guidance in Show-Notes
I have removed the textual image numbers from the start of the show-notes. This was kind of redundant, as I’m sure most people don’t reference them, and they make the feed look a bit shabby in iTunes. I also removed the notes about there being an MP3 version from the Enhanced version, and visa versa. And I removed the links directly to the Podcast on the Podcasts page. I don’t know if people ever used these links, but I doubt it, so they’re gone too.
Anyway, this helped us to get the feed file down from 1.1MB to 400KB, which will give us another year or so of episodes in the iTunes archive before we have to split some of the older episodes off.
